Differences Between Marketing, Advertising, and Propaganda

I believe marketing, advertising, and propaganda are all relatively similar but do have a few major differences.

When I think of marketing I think of how a company looks to display their product in the market place. Marketing is a managerial concept that follows a product from a concept to a physical product in consumers' hands. I believe one of the most important aspects of marketing is establishing a target market and understanding how to meet their needs.

I believe advertising is a by-product of marketing. An advertisment is a part of a marketing plan. An example of a good advertisement would be something like this..

The marketing plan for this iPod involves much more than this advertisement but this advertisement does a good job at getting you interested i the product. I wonder if I really can "Feel the sound".

When I hear the word propaganda I usually assume it's explaining a negative situation. I've heard the word propaganda a lot in films about Hitler so this is probably why. I believe propaganda is when false information is spread to either help of hurt a person, product, or group.

Do other people have the same feeling about the word propaganda that I do? Do you think we will be studying all three (marketing, advertising, and propaganda)?
